3/8 or 1/2 Inch? Choosing the Right Steel Target Thickness

What each thickness actually handles, what the extra eighth of an inch costs you in weight, and the one rule that matters more than either number.

Once someone has decided they want a steel target and figured out that it needs to be real AR500, the next question arrives immediately: how thick? Target makers sell the same gong in 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch, the half inch costs more and ships heavier, and most listings do a poor job of explaining who actually needs which.

The answer is simpler than the forums make it sound, and it hinges on understanding one thing about how bullets damage steel. Get that one thing, and the thickness decision mostly makes itself.

Velocity Kills Plates, Not Energy

The instinct is to think of target damage in terms of power: bigger cartridge, more damage. But the number that determines whether a bullet pits a hardened plate is impact velocity, not muzzle energy.

The rough rule for AR500 is that trouble starts when impacts arrive above roughly 2,700 feet per second. Below that speed, the plate destroys the bullet. Above it, the bullet starts to work on the plate, regardless of how much or how little total energy it carries.

This produces results that surprise people. A .44 Magnum carries a lot of energy, but it lumbers along around 1,400 feet per second, and 3/8 inch AR500 handles it all day. A 55 grain 5.56 round is a lightweight by comparison, but it leaves the muzzle at nearly 3,200 feet per second, and up close it is one of the hardest common rounds on steel. The little rifle round is the plate killer. The big revolver round is easy work.

Distance is how you control impact velocity, because bullets shed speed fast in the air. That same 5.56 round that would dimple a plate at 50 yards has slowed enough by 100 yards to splatter cleanly. This is half the reason the minimums in our safe distance guide exist: they protect you from fragmentation, and they protect the plate from velocity.

What 3/8 Inch AR500 Handles

With that rule in hand, here is what 3/8 inch certified AR500 comfortably handles, and it is more than most people expect.

Every common pistol caliber, from .22 LR through 9mm and .45 ACP up to the magnums, at pistol distances. All of it, indefinitely. Pistol rounds are so far below the velocity threshold that a 3/8 plate will outlast several barrels' worth of pistol ammunition.

Standard rifle calibers at their proper minimums. 5.56 and .223 with lead core loads at 100 yards. .308, .30-06, and 6.5 Creedmoor at 100 yards. The high velocity light calibers like .243 and .270 at 100 to 125 yards. Shotgun birdshot, buckshot, and slugs at their respective distances. This is the whole mainstream of recreational shooting, and 3/8 inch handles all of it within the distance rules.

This is why 3/8 inch is what we build our systems around, and why it is the right answer for most shooters. On an 18 inch gong it weighs about 28 pounds, which is right at the edge of what one person carries across a field comfortably. It rings loud, it swings well on the straps, and it stays portable, which matters enormously if your range is a spot on public land rather than a bench you drive up to.

When 1/2 Inch Earns Its Weight

Moving to 1/2 inch buys you margin, and there are shooters who genuinely need it.

You want 1/2 inch if magnum rifles are a regular part of your diet: .300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag and up, shot frequently rather than occasionally. You want it if you run high volumes of 5.56 near the 100 yard minimum, especially with mixed ammunition that might include steel core M855, which is harder on plate than its lead core cousins. You want it for .338 Lapua class cartridges, and it is mandatory territory for .50 BMG, which also demands 400 yards of distance no matter what the plate is.

And you might simply want it for a dedicated long range rifle gong that never has to move, where the extra mass is a benefit: a heavier plate swings less, resets faster, and takes hard use with more margin.

The cost is real, though. That same 18 inch gong in 1/2 inch is about 37 pounds, a third heavier, before the stand and hardware. On a plate that lives at one spot forever, irrelevant. On a system you carry, set up, tear down, and haul back to the truck, nine extra pounds is the difference between a target you bring every time and a target that starts staying home.

What About 1/4 Inch?

You will see 1/4 inch AR500 sold, usually cheap, and it has exactly one honest use: rimfire and pistol, only, forever. It is fine steel for a .22 plinking plate. The problem is that nothing stops a future range day from including a friend's AR, and one magazine of 5.56 will dish a 1/4 inch plate. If there is any chance rifles ever get pointed at it, the thin plate is a false economy. Buy the thickness for the range days you will actually have, not the ones you are planning to be disciplined about.

The Decision, Distilled

If you shoot pistols, or rifles at proper distances, or both, which describes the overwhelming majority of steel shooters: 3/8 inch certified AR500. It handles everything mainstream, and it is light enough that your target system stays a portable system.

If magnum rifles, steel core ammunition, or very high volume rifle work near minimum distances are your normal, not your exception: spend up on 1/2 inch, accept the weight, and ideally make it a dedicated plate that lives at your rifle distance.

And in either case, the thickness only holds up if the other rules do: real certified plate, proper distances, lead core ammunition, and the slight forward lean that sends splatter into the dirt. Thickness is not a substitute for any of those. It is what makes the plate durable while the rest of the setup makes it safe.
