What "AR500" Actually Means (And Why Cheap Plate Isn't)
Brinell hardness in plain language, why the cutting method matters as much as the steel, and how to spot mystery plate before your money and your safety depend on it.
Spend ten minutes shopping for steel targets online and you will notice something: everything says AR500. The $170 gong from a dedicated target maker says AR500. The $45 plate from a marketplace listing with a stock photo and a seller name made of random letters also says AR500. Same three characters, same claim, wildly different steel.
The label is doing a lot of work in those listings, and most buyers have no way to check it. So this article is the plain language version of what that rating actually means, why it matters every single time a bullet hits your target, and how to tell the difference between certified plate and steel that just says so on the label.
AR500 Is a Hardness, Not a Brand
AR stands for abrasion resistant, and the number is a hardness rating on the Brinell scale. The Brinell test is refreshingly physical: a machine presses a hard ball into the steel with a set amount of force, and the size of the dent tells you the hardness. Small dent, hard steel, big number.
For context, the mild steel used in construction and general fabrication, the stuff most cheap targets are actually made of, sits around 120 to 180 Brinell. AR400, a genuine abrasion resistant grade used in equipment like dump truck beds, sits around 400. AR500 plate is certified to roughly 470 to 530 Brinell, and AR550 runs a step above that for high volume rifle use.
That difference is not a percentage improvement. It is a different category of behavior. Steel target shooting only works, and is only safe, because of one specific interaction: the plate must be so much harder than the bullet that the bullet is the thing that gets destroyed. When a lead core rifle round meets true AR500, the bullet splatters into fragments and the plate shrugs. What Happens When the Plate Is Softer Than Advertised
Flip that hardness relationship and everything downstream changes. When a rifle round hits mild steel, the bullet does not splatter cleanly. It craters the plate. Each hit leaves a pit, and each pit is a small curved surface facing some random direction.
Here is why that matters more than cosmetics: every one of those pits redirects the next bullet that lands in it. A smooth, properly angled plate sends fragmentation downward in a predictable pattern. A pitted plate sends fragments wherever the geometry of the damage points, including back toward the firing line. There is no safe distance chart for a cratered target, because the whole idea of a safe distance assumes the impact behaves predictably.
This is the real cost of the $45 mystery gong. It is not that it wears out faster, although it does. It is that after a few boxes of rifle ammunition it becomes a random splatter generator, and it looks fine from 100 yards away.
Hardened All the Way Through, Not Just at the Skin
One more distinction worth knowing, because it separates real target plate from clever imitations: genuine AR500 is hardened all the way through. The steel is quenched and tempered at the mill so the hardness runs the full depth of the plate, and it ships with mill certification paperwork that states the measured Brinell numbers for that specific batch.
Some cheap plate is case hardened instead, meaning a thin hard skin over a soft core. It will pass a scratch test and might even ring nicely for a while. Then rounds start punching through the skin, the soft core craters, and you are back to the mystery steel problem with extra steps. When a manufacturer talks about certified plate, mill certs are what they mean: a paper trail from the mill that made the steel, not a claim typed into a product listing.
The Part Nobody Mentions: How the Plate Was Cut
Here is the detail that surprises people, and it is where some honestly sourced AR500 targets still go wrong. You can start with certified plate and ruin it in the cutting process.
AR500 gets its hardness from heat treatment, which means heat can take that hardness away. Cut a gong out of plate with a hand torch or a poorly run plasma table and you cook the steel along every cut edge. The result is a target that is genuinely AR500 in the middle and soft mild steel for a band around the edge and, critically, around every bolt hole. Edge hits and hits near the mounting holes, which every target collects plenty of, land on the soft zone. The plate pits exactly where it also carries structural load.
Quality target makers control for this with cutting methods that keep the heat affected zone tiny, and by treating the cut as part of the spec rather than an afterthought. When you are comparing targets, "certified AR500" answers half the question. "Cut how?" is the other half.
How to Spot Mystery Steel Before You Buy
You cannot Brinell test a product listing, but you can read the signals, and they are reliable.
Price is the first one, and it is close to physics. Certified AR500 plate costs real money per pound, and a 3/8 inch thick 18 inch gong is over 25 pounds of it before anyone cuts, drills, coats, or ships anything. A finished gong that size selling for $40 shipped is not made of AR500. It cannot be. Nobody is selling certified plate below the cost of the raw steel.
Documentation is the second. Makers who buy certified plate say so specifically, because the certs exist and they paid for them. Look for the words mill certified, a named steel grade with a thickness, and a maker who will answer the question directly when you ask. Vague listings that say "military grade steel" or bury "AR500" in a keyword pile without ever committing to a thickness are telling you what you need to know.
Weight is the third. Steel has a known density, so a given diameter and thickness has a known weight. If a listing's shipping weight is dramatically lighter than the math says it should be, the plate is thinner than advertised, and a seller who shaves the thickness is not the seller with real mill certs.
And once you own a target, the plate itself will tell you the truth. Shoot it at proper distance with lead core ammunition and inspect it. Smooth face after a session: real. Pits and craters: not. Where We Stand

Buy the real plate. It is the one component in your whole range setup that you cannot inspect from the outside, so it is the one place where the label has to be true.
